Which play kitchen is right for your child?
Author: Louise Genna Date Posted:15 August 2026
Step2 makes eight play kitchens available in Australia, from the entry-level Best Chefs Kitchen (around $206) to the premium Life Style Dream Kitchen (around $499) - plus the outdoor Grill & Go BBQ Cart. They're all genuine, double-walled moulded-plastic units carrying Step2's 3-year warranty, so the real decision isn't build quality - it's matching the size, features and style to your child and your space.
The short answer: the Best Chefs Kitchen is the best all-round choice for most Australian families; the Fun with Friends Kitchen is best when several children play together; the Garden Fresh Kitchen fits the smallest spaces; and the Modern Metro or Life Style Dream are the premium centrepieces. Here's how to choose between them.

How to choose a Step2 play kitchen
1. Start with the space you have
Measure the spot first. The Garden Fresh Kitchen has the smallest floor footprint in the range at just 62 cm wide, which makes it the easiest to fit into a bedroom corner or a compact playroom. At the other end, the Modern Metro Kitchen is 118 cm wide - a genuine centrepiece that needs a dedicated wall. Everything else sits between the two, around 86-97 cm wide.
2. One child, or several at once?
If your child usually plays with siblings or friends, the oversized Fun with Friends Kitchen is built for it, with large countertops and multiple play stations. The Gilded Gourmet Kitchen also encourages parallel play across its open window and counter. For solo play, any of the single-station kitchens is plenty.
3. Decide which interactive features matter
Every Step2 kitchen has clickable knobs and moulded-in appliances, but the extras differ. Most - including the Best Chefs, Fun with Friends, Garden Fresh and Gilded Gourmet - have an electronic stovetop with lights and cooking sounds (these take AA batteries, not included). The Garden Fresh and Life Style Dream add a working overhead light. The Life Style Dream includes the largest accessory set (37 pieces). If you'd rather add accessories separately, the play kitchen range pairs well with our Play Food Assortment.
4. Match the age and height
All Step2 play kitchens are recommended for ages 2 and up and suit toddlers through to early primary school. Younger toddlers enjoy the simple pour-and-stir play; older children get into elaborate pretend-cooking scenarios. Because the units stand around 83-114 cm tall, taller/older kids are comfortably accommodated too.
5. Indoor, outdoor, or both?
All Step2 kitchens are moulded from weather-resistant plastic, but the Grill & Go BBQ Cart is the one purpose-built for outside - a lift-up barbecue with a light-and-sizzle charcoal effect, a shade umbrella and wheels to roll it wherever the family is. It's a natural companion to summer water and sand play in the wider outdoor toys range.
6. Pick a style that suits your home
Step2 offers real design variety rather than one kitchen in different colours: the neutral, farmhouse Timeless Trends Kitchen; the on-trend Gilded Gourmet with tile backsplash and faux-gold fittings; and the slate-finish Modern Metro. If you want the kitchen to blend into a real living space, the Life Style Dream is designed to do exactly that.
7. Plastic or wooden?
The main alternative to a Step2 kitchen is a wooden play kitchen. Timber looks lovely in a living room, but it can't go outside, tends to chip and mark with heavy daily use, and rarely includes working lights or sounds. Step2 kitchens are moulded from durable, double-walled plastic - they wipe clean, shrug off weather, need no sanding or repainting, and build in electronic features wood can't. If a natural-timber look is your top priority, a wooden kitchen may suit; if you want something that survives everyday toddler use indoors or out, plastic is the practical choice.
Why choose a Step2 kitchen
Step2 kitchens are made from durable, double-walled rotationally-moulded plastic - the colour runs all the way through, so they resist fading and cracking and need essentially no maintenance, indoors or out. As the authorised Australian Step2 distributor, we import every kitchen directly from the manufacturer (not a parallel import), and each carries Step2's standard 3-year manufacturer's warranty. Orders dispatch within 24 hours from our Melbourne warehouse with tracking. You can see the whole line-up on our play kitchens page.
Frequently asked questions
What age is a Step2 play kitchen suitable for?
Every Step2 play kitchen is recommended for ages 2 and up. They suit toddlers through to early primary-school children - younger toddlers enjoy simple pretend cooking, while older kids move into more elaborate role play.
Which Step2 kitchen is best for a small space?
The Garden Fresh Kitchen has the narrowest footprint in the range at 62 cm wide, making it the easiest to fit into a small playroom or bedroom corner. Most other models are around 86-97 cm wide, and the Modern Metro is the largest at 118 cm.
Which Step2 kitchen is best for more than one child?
The Fun with Friends Kitchen is purpose-built for group play, with oversized countertops and room for several children to cook together. The Gilded Gourmet also supports parallel play across its open window and counter space.
Do Step2 play kitchens need batteries?
Models with an electronic stovetop or working light need batteries for those features (typically AA, not included) - for example the Best Chefs, Garden Fresh and Life Style Dream. The kitchens still work fully as pretend-play units without batteries; the batteries only power the lights and sounds.
Do they come with play food and accessories?
Some kitchens include an accessory set - the Life Style Dream comes with 37 pieces, and the Garden Fresh includes built-in accessories. For any kitchen, our separate Play Food Assortment (101 pieces) is an easy way to stock it with realistic pretend food.
Can a Step2 play kitchen be used outdoors?
All Step2 kitchens are moulded from weather-resistant plastic and tolerate outdoor use, but the Grill & Go BBQ Cart is the model designed specifically for outside, with a shade umbrella and wheels. For longest life, bring any kitchen under cover in extreme weather.
Are Step2 play kitchens plastic or wooden?
Step2 play kitchens are made from durable, double-walled moulded plastic, not wood. Compared with a wooden play kitchen, the plastic wipes clean, resists weather so it can be used outdoors, needs no sanding or repainting, and supports electronic lights and sounds. A wooden kitchen mainly suits buyers who specifically want a natural-timber look.
Are these genuine Step2 products, and what warranty applies?
Yes. We're the authorised Australian Step2 distributor, and every kitchen is imported directly from the manufacturer, not a parallel import. All kitchens carry Step2's standard 3-year manufacturer's warranty.
